Evergreen is seeking an energetic individual with an interest in community development to assist Evergreen’s Community Garden Coordinator in delivering programming at a number of sites linked to social service agencies, including the Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Community Garden.  This contract position starts at the beginning of May and ends in November.

Requirements

Applicants must be able to register at Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training (Aboriginal, Inuit or Métis background) and have been recently unemployed or underemployed.

Main Areas of Responsibility:
Reporting to the Community Gardens Coordinator, the Community Development Intern will:

  • Engage and involve clients of social service agencies involved in Evergreen’s “Growing Opportunities” project in volunteer plantings and garden maintenance events and educational workshops;
  • Coordinate workshops on nutrition; food security; job opportunities in the landscape trades; life skills; and plants relevant to Aboriginal traditions for both an Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal audience;
  • Assist Evergreen staff with the organization of planting and garden education activities that promote Aboriginal cultures at other Evergreen garden sites; 
  • Oversee gardening activities at community garden sites– from planting through to harvest;
  • Assist with project evaluation and reporting (e.g., budgeting, preparing reports).

    Qualifications:

  • Experience working with marginalized populations such as at-risk youth
  • Experience in creating, planning & delivering programming an asset;
  • Good communication skills – both written and verbal;
  • Group facilitation skills
  • Interest in food security, nutrition and food education;
  • Knowledge of or interest in, traditional Aboriginal plant uses; horticulture; landscaping and/or native plants an asset.
  • Background in social service work, teaching, community development an asset.
  • Organized, creative and able to work independently;
  • Supervisory experience (can be volunteer experience);
  • Basic familiarity with computers (MS Word);
  • Flexibility to work some weekends and evenings;
